Summary:

The CFX Supervisor leads a team to create and execute the Director’s vision of fur , cloth, and muscle/skin on the production.

 

Duties:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast paced, high stress environment with competing priorities.
  • Guiding and mentoring artists in advancing their work towards asset/shot approval
  • Recommends creative and technical solutions to aesthetic and technical problems.
  • Accountable for asset and shot management.
  • Accountable for on time, on budget execution and delivery of up to date grooms, groom rigs, cloth rigs, muscle/skin rigs, and final shot simulation work throughout production
  • Develop and maintain all department documentation of current pipeline and techniques
  • Training new hires in department standards, work flow, and techniques.
  • Work well with team members in an advisory role and can show them process and troubleshooting.
  • Communication across all departments

 

  • Cloth:
  • Prepares the assets for cloth simulation, including and not limited to creating the cloth simulation rig for the asset.
  • Leads the development of a cloth simulation rig for an asset, including and limited to the development and exploration of character cloth motion and defining their baseline default parameters.
  • Run realistic, stylized and complex cloth shot simulations in a production environment
  • Performs corrective shapes and sculpting fixes for cloth simulation in shot
  • Develop complex garments for use in shot work
  • Develop and create new tools for the pipeline and shot artists
  • Rendering and QC of cloth elements

 

  • Fur:
  • Procedurally groom hero-level and complex hair and fur using XGen.
  • Discover new techniques to achieve groom direction in the most efficient and flexible way and shares them with the team
  • Prepares the approved groom for animation rigging.
  • Prepares the approved groom for simulation, including and not limited to creating the fur simulation rig for the asset.
  • Leads the development of a fur simulation rig for an asset, including and limited to the development and exploration of character hair motion and defining their baseline default parameters.
  • Run realistic and stylized fur simulations in a production environment
  • Rendering and QC of fur elements

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Cloth:
  • Solid experience with multiple types of cloth solvers such as nCloth, Syflex, or Qualoth.
  • Solid knowledge of the physics of motion and timing, cloth and hair motion.
  • Expert knowledge of nCloth, nHair, deformers, and rigging techniques.

 

  • Fur:
  • Expert understanding of current grooming systems and techniques.
  • Expert understanding with xGen or other grooming packages.
  • Expert understanding of general grooming toolsets and is able to troubleshoot.

 

 

Qualifications:

7+ years of experience in film/animation/vfx

Degree/diploma in fine arts/computer science or equivalent experience

Requires Expert knowledge of Maya

Requires Expert knowledge of XGen, XGen C++ API, XGen Architecture, XGen Data Structure, and XGen Pipeline Integration.

Expert knowledge of Ziva Dynamics is a plus.

Knowledge of mel, python, C++ or other scripting language is a plus.

Able to communicate effectively and respectfully.

Experience working in a fast paced, high stress environment with competing priorities.

Experience providing excellent service to inter-departmental needs and external-departmental hand-offs and de-escalating conflicts.

Attention to detail.

Ensures the moral and artist experience is optimal.

Accurately maintains all required records needed for training and production tracking.

Provides information to the team and encourages growth and challenges.

Skill in safely handling artist interactions, including those with unknown temperament.

Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques and principles.

Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with upstream and downstream department leads and supervisors.

Able to multitask and prioritize

Able to work in a team based structure

Able to follow directions well and collaborate with other CFX Supervisors.

Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas.

Able to take constructive feedback from the VFX Supervisor and Director.

Able to work independently on shots without guidance

Able to work independently and advance towards asset/shot approval without daily supervision

Able to effectively manage and lead a team of artists
