ENVIRONMENT SUPERVISOR

Reporting directly to the CG Supervisor, the Environment Supervisor will supervise, monitor, direct and influence wide-ranging aspects of high-end environment and matte painting creation across multiple projects. This position is directly responsible for ensuring disciplines of scene assembly, layout, set dressing and design, modeling, texturing, matte painting & rigging can create realistic environment assets for high-end feature film.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support environment and asset creation for all shows;
  • Participate in asset conceptualizing with the Art Director and VFX Supervisor;
  • Ensure assets are created in-line with the creative brief and supportive of render optimization and reuse;
  • Interact closely with the Assets supervisor to scope out needs and requirements;
  • Ensure seamless handover between departments;
  • Design projection/2.5d setups and needs, while providing technical supports and mockups;
  • Oversee asset layouts and set dressings in a creative and technically thorough manner;
  • Match plates and on-set photographic references to create integrated environments;
  • Work with the compositing leads to secure coverage maps to assist in determining matte painting requirements;
  • Provide lighting teams with QA’d assets that can be successfully lit and rendered;
  • Work closely with production on delivery schedules, timeliness and quality standards;
  • Review and approve all work for deliveries, ensuring both creative and technical notes are hit;
  • Set studio quality standards by continuously providing feedback to the team to improve the assets;
  • Ensure matte painting and modeling leads are running their teams effectively, providing guidance and advice on resolving issues as they arise;
  • Mentor and train team members;
  • Promote a collaborative work environment while influencing morale, fostering discussion and a positive work ethic.

Required skills and experience:

  • Minimum 3 years supervisory or leadership positions in areas such as modelling, texturing, rigging and environment creation;
  • Practiced knowledge of software including Maya, Katana, Nuke, Photoshop, Mari & zBrush;
  • Experience working in a Linux system environment required;
  • Experience managing and directing scripts and tool development in a production focused environment;
  • Familiarity with coding in Python an asset;
  • Knowledge of rigging and animated topology;
  • Maintain a calm demeanor in a deadline focused work environment;
  • Real world understanding of proportion, depth, scale, and physical space;
  • High level of people management and organizational skills;
  • Strong technical and creative problem solving mindset.
